Plymouth, United Kingdom, April 30, 2015 — Local stakeholders in the Southwest of the United Kingdom gathered at “Britain’s Ocean City” for a conference on the upcoming implementation of ballast water regulations for the shipping industry.
The one day conference was organized by The Marine Innovation Center (MARIC), of Plymouth University, and was billed “Ballast Water — Everything you need to know but were too afraid to ask”. It was hosted by the Plymouth Marine Laboratory at their conference center.
Assure Controls President and CEO, Bryan Bjorndal, was the moderator of the panel “Environmental Stewardship of Maritime Industry”, and was a panelist for the session “Information, Resources, Implementation”, which focused on the importance of online training and education. Most of the conference was a call for open communication and sharing of ballast water treatment system information and best management practices. The maritime industry stakeholder orientation attracted a diverse set of participants, which included: an IMO delegate (Minister of Maritime Affairs, South Africa), a representative from UK MCGA, a visitor from Cyprus, the head of UK Harbormasters organization, and Plymouth City Council representatives amongst the 35 attendees.
